Amex Membership Rewards Credit Card
Amex Membership Rewards Credit Card is the best entry-level miles collection card in India. Amex MR points are the most valuable transferable currency available to Indian card holders, transferring to Air India Flying Returns and other partners at ratios that can generate ₹0.50-1.50 in travel value per point depending on redemption. At ₹1,000/year with a monthly milestone bonus of 1,000 points for making 6 transactions above ₹1,000, MRCC effectively gives you 12,000 bonus points/year (worth ₹6,000-18,000 in travel) just for using the card regularly.

The base earn rate of 1 MR point per ₹50 (effectively 2% in MR points at high-value redemptions) is competitive. But MRCC's real differentiation is points currency quality, not earn rate. Amex MR points do not expire as long as your card is active. They transfer to Air India Flying Returns (1:1), Marriott Bonvoy (3:2), and other partners. On Air India business class redemptions at 50,000-80,000 miles, the effective rupee value per mile is ₹1-1.50, meaning MRCC's 2% effective earn equals ₹2-3 in travel value per ₹100 spent on the right redemptions. No other entry card in India at ₹1,000/year offers this points quality. The absence of lounge access and lower Amex acceptance in Tier 2 cities are the two genuine limitations.
Frequent fliers and travel enthusiasts who want to collect high-quality transferable miles on an accessible entry-level card with a low annual fee, particularly those already flying Air India.
You never fly or use hotel points, because the MR points require airline/hotel redemptions to achieve their best value. For pure cashback, Amazon Pay ICICI (free, 5% on Amazon) or SC Smart (₹999, 2% flat) are better choices.
2 MR pts/₹50 on select (~2%), 1 pt/₹50 other (~1%) · 1pt = ₹0.20-0.50 · 1,000 bonus pts for 4 txns of ₹1,500+/month · Transferable to hotel/airline partners
MR points best redeemed via hotel/airline transfers (₹0.30-0.50/point). Catalog redemption gives only ₹0.20/point. Monthly milestone of 4 transactions of ₹1,500+ gives 1,000 bonus points.
PROS
- Excellent rewards with milestone bonus
- Transferable points to airlines/hotels
- Premium Amex experience
CONS
- ₹1,000 joining fee + ₹4,500 annual renewal from year 2
- Points expire after 12 months if not redeemed
- Limited acceptance vs Visa/MC in India
- Monthly milestone bonus (1,000 MR points for 6 transactions above ₹1,000): This is MRCC's most underrated feature. Make 6 purchases of ₹1,000 or more per month and earn 1,000 bonus MR points. Over 12 months, that is 12,000 bonus points with zero extra spend, just spreading normal purchases into 6 ₹1,000+ transactions. At ₹1/point on Air India flights, that is ₹12,000 in free travel from a ₹1,000-fee card.
- Dining at Amex partner restaurants (up to 5X points): Amex's dining partner programme in India includes select fine dining and popular restaurant chains in metro cities where you earn 5X MR points. At 5X on a ₹3,000 restaurant bill, you earn 300 points vs 60 points base. If you dine regularly at partner restaurants, this accelerated earn dramatically improves your miles accumulation.
- Air India ticket purchases: Purchasing Air India tickets on MRCC earns base MR points that transfer directly to Air India Flying Returns at 1:1. A ₹15,000 economy ticket earns 300 MR points base (plus any dining or travel multiplier). Transfer to Air India and accumulate towards business class upgrades or free economy redemptions.
- Everyday spend on Amex-accepted merchants in metro cities: In major cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune), Amex acceptance at premium retail, modern trade, and high-end restaurants is strong. Run your grocery, apparel, and dining spend on MRCC in these cities and earn 1 point per ₹50, boosted by dining partners and milestone bonuses.
- Building towards Marriott Bonvoy points for hotel redemptions: Amex MR points transfer to Marriott Bonvoy at 3:2 ratio (3 MR = 2 Bonvoy). For free night redemptions at Marriott properties in India (typically 25,000-35,000 Bonvoy points for Tier 2 properties), accumulating 37,500-52,500 MR points via MRCC earns one free hotel night. At ₹10,000/month spend over a year, you accumulate approximately 2,400 base points plus 12,000 milestone points = 14,400 MR points annually.
SC Smart earns 2% flat cashback plus 5% weekend dining for ₹999/year. If you want real rupee cashback and do not fly enough to use miles, SC Smart's 2% flat return beats MRCC's base earn rate (which only matches 2% at high-value MR redemptions).
Amex is frequently declined at petrol stations, smaller offline merchants, government portals, and many Tier 2 city retailers. YES Uni (free, 1% flat Visa) ensures you earn something on every non-Amex transaction instead of earning nothing.
Amex is accepted at fewer merchants internationally than Visa or Mastercard, and MRCC has no lounge access for airport comfort. RBL Safari's Visa with international lounge access and 1.5% flat is more practical for international travel. Use Amex MRCC for flight bookings and dining, not for all international spend.
Amazon Pay ICICI gives 5% cashback on Amazon purchases (free card), which is immediate, liquid cash value. On ₹5,000/month Amazon spend, that is ₹3,000/year in Amazon balance vs MRCC's 1,200 base MR points (potentially ₹600-1,800 depending on redemption) annually.
YES Uni (free) covers all merchants that do not accept Amex with 1% flat cashback. Amex MRCC handles partner restaurants (5X), monthly milestone points, and Amex-accepted merchants for miles accumulation. Together you earn miles where Amex works and cash everywhere else, with a combined annual fee of ₹1,000.
View Uni YES Bank Credit Card →Amazon Pay ICICI (free) earns 5% on Amazon for Prime members. Amex MRCC handles non-Amazon spend, dining, and milestone miles. Together: maximum online cashback plus transferable miles on general spend. Total fee ₹1,000/year.
RBL Safari provides 12 lounge visits (including 4 international) that MRCC completely lacks. Amex MRCC handles dining, milestone bonuses, and Air India mile accumulation. Together they give the lounge access (Safari) and the best entry-level miles currency (MRCC) for ₹2,999/year total fee.
View RBL World Safari Credit Card →What is 1 Amex MR point actually worth?
The value of 1 MR point depends entirely on how you redeem it. Direct Amex statement credit typically values points at ₹0.25-0.35/point, making it inefficient. Redemption for Amazon Pay or Flipkart vouchers typically yields ₹0.25-0.50/point. Transferring to Air India Flying Returns at 1:1 and redeeming for economy domestic flights yields approximately ₹0.50-0.75/point. Redeeming for international business class on Air India or partner airlines at low mileage rates can yield ₹1-1.50/point or more. Always transfer to an airline program for the best value.
How does the 6-transaction milestone bonus work in practice?
Each calendar month, if you make 6 or more purchases of ₹1,000 or above each using your MRCC, Amex credits 1,000 bonus MR points to your account within the next billing cycle. The 6 transactions do not need to be in any specific category. Splitting a large purchase into 6 smaller ones does not work if they fall below ₹1,000 each. Plan your ₹1,000+ purchases (grocery trips, fuel, dining, subscriptions) to hit 6 per month.
Where is Amex not accepted in India that I should know about?
Amex has significantly lower acceptance in India compared to Visa and Mastercard. Key gaps: most petrol stations (HPCL, BPCL, Indian Oil) do not accept Amex; government payment portals (income tax, utility boards) often do not; many Tier 2 and Tier 3 city retailers do not have Amex terminals; some budget hotels and smaller restaurants in non-metro cities decline Amex. In metros at modern trade and upscale establishments, Amex acceptance is generally fine.
Do Amex MR points expire?
Amex MR points do not expire as long as your MRCC account is active and in good standing. However, if you close your Amex card, all MR points are forfeited immediately. Transfer points to an airline partner program before closing the card. MR points also do not expire within the Amex ecosystem but check current terms for any programme-level changes.
Can I transfer Amex MR points to IndiGo or SpiceJet?
As of June 2026, Amex India's transfer partners include Air India Flying Returns and Marriott Bonvoy. IndiGo and SpiceJet do not participate in Amex transfer partnerships. If you primarily fly IndiGo or SpiceJet, a co-brand card for those airlines (if available) or a flexible bank points card would be more useful for those specific airline redemptions.
Is the Amex MRCC worth having alongside a better rewards card?
Yes, specifically for the milestone bonus and points quality. Even if you use SC Smart (2% flat) or RBL Safari (1.5% flat) as your primary card, running ₹6,000-10,000/month through MRCC to hit the 6-transaction milestone earns 1,000 points/month or 12,000 points/year in bonus MR points alone. At ₹1/point on Air India, that is ₹12,000 in flight value for a ₹1,000-fee card. The key is to run your Amex-accepted spend through MRCC strategically alongside your main card.
Does Amex MRCC have any welcome bonus for new card holders?
Amex MRCC typically offers a welcome bonus of 2,000-4,000 MR points on meeting a first-spend threshold within 90 days of card issuance. Welcome offers vary by channel and promotional period. Apply directly through Amex India's website for the current offer. The welcome bonus alone can be worth ₹1,000-6,000 in travel value at Air India redemption rates.
